Menstrual cramping,  or “dysmenorrhea,” is the pain that comes with menstruation,  this affects 50 percent of women approx and 15% of those will suffer pain that limits  normal activities and can leaves them bed ridden for days.

As the lining of the uterus (endometrium) begins breaking down during menstruation, dying tissues release hormones called prostaglandins into the blood stream. Prostaglandins cause the muscles of the uterus to contract as they force the endometrial material through the cervix and the vagina.

As pieces of the uterine lining pass through the cervix, pressure from contracting muscles may cause pain in the uterus. Most menstrual cramps last from 15 to 90 seconds and generally start in the lower abdomen and pelvis. Pain can be continuous or periodic and usually lasts for 2-4 days.

The intensity of menstrual cramping is related to the concentration of hormones and other neurochemicals in the blood. Women with narrower cervical canals also tend to suffer from more painful cramping. The cramps endured by some women during menstruation are similar to those experienced by women during early stages of childbirth.

How to stimulate points.
For this treatment 3 methods of stimulations are used.
Hold: this is a figure, pen, or any rounded object and hold it on the point.
Bounce: This is used for abdominal point like CV4 & CV6. this is where to you use a blunt object and bounce it on the point like turn a push button on and off quickly.
Rub: use for the BL point as it’s hard to get to them. And you just use a good medium pressure and rub the points.

Timing
The normal pattern is hold/bounce/rub for 7 seconds rest for 3, do this 3 time for each point then do the whole sequence 3 time at least 2-3 times a day starting a week before you period.

These Point can also be done with moxibution or cupping, the same principle that applies to these modalities are the same as the acupressure, it’s just a different tool to clear Qi blockages.
